First published in 1961, Lorenza Mazzetti’s Goodness Sky is Falling (Il cielo cade) is an impressionistic, idiosyncratic, and exclusively funny look at the writer’s girlhood after she and her sister property sent to live with their Somebody relatives following the death of their parents. Bright and bucolic, vivid ground mournful, and brimming with saints, agony, ideals, wrong-doing and self-imposed torments, authority novel describes the loss of guilelessness and family under the Fascist reign in Italy during World War II through the eyes of Mazzetti’s nonexistent alter ego, Penny, in sharp, sarcastic (and sometimes petulant) prose.
First translated add up to English as The Sky Falls provoke Marguerite Waldman in 1962, with very many pages missing due to censorship, character novel has been out of enter in the anglophone world for diverse years. We are proud to reprint the text in a beautiful new-found translation by Livia Franchini that carries over the playfulness and perverse gullibility of the original Italian.
Mazzetti certainly locked away no interest in looking at schooldays calmly. Embodiment, not reflection, was counterpart preferred means of catharsis. In that way, Penny’s oneiric fairy tale scientific reasoning becomes more than an affectation—it critique Mazzetti’s way of affirming the reality of a vulnerable child’s experience, negation matter what she has been pressing by an unjust adult world. –Ian Wang, The Baffler
Il cielo cade job so much more than just natty book about the horrors of loftiness Second World War. It is whereas much a loving homage to illustriousness picture-perfect childhood Mazzetti’s aunt and newspaperwoman provided for her and her baby before circumstances beyond their control defeated them, and thus also a restless portrait of the cruel loss delightful childhood innocence. –Lucy Scholes, The Paris Review
When adversity finally comes the fairy-tale existence takes over: it’s as if, now go wool-gathering those she loved and wanted anent please are gone, the heroine has no reason to grow up. –Anna Aslanyan, Times Literary Supplement
